Just for Historical Perspective

...and not to piss in anyone's cornflakes...

Though the Cubs have the best record in baseball at 37-21, through 58 games, they're STILL eight games off the pace of the '98 Yankees who were 45-13 after 58. They went on to win 114 and the World Series, yikes.

The 2001 Mariners were 46-12 through 58, that team won 116 games, but they lost 4-1 in the ALCS so let's not dwell on that.

And an interesting statistical quirk, both the 89 an 84 cubs, the last two cubs teams to win 90 games in a season (98 doesn't count, that 90th win came in the playoff game against the Giants for the right to be swept by the Braves.) were both 33-25 through 58. 89 team won 93 games, 84 team won 96.

Lou letting Marmol pitch at all with a 4 run lead, let alone into a second inning, has my blood boiling right now. Rest him, rest him for when it matters.
